Redefining What it Means to be an Outdoors[wo]man.

I find this woman, Ashley Bredemus, weirdly inspiring.  Not that she is weird; it is more that I am inspired by the choice of a living arrangement I find a little horrifying – a 200 square foot cabin in the remote northeastern tip of Minnesota along the Sea Gull River, with no running water, heated by firewood, 90-minutes from the nearest town.

Why am I inspired?  Ashley followed her heart, her instincts, plunged into the unknown, taking both financial and personal risks to follow her heart.  She found love, a vocation, and a remarkable life.  She is also so real.  There is no artifice.  She reveals a world unknown to me on the 12th floor of my Philadelphia Center City apartment.

Ashley explains the motivation for her blog here-

“If you walk away with any message from The Cabin Season I hope it’s this: The outdoors, the wilderness, mother nature -she’d like to be a foundation of wellness and inspiration for you.  It’s your birthright to connect with her in a mutually beneficial relationship.  You are the wilderness!”

And how did I discover this young woman’s story?  Sam Sifton’s NYT Cooking newsletter of course.  All the best offbeat, unusual tidbits truly worth a read can be found in his newsletters (and some good recipes too.)

Check out Ashley’s writings and be inspired too.  Find her blog at thecabinseason.com and follow her on Instagram @ashleybredemus.  Meet her dog, Arlo, her hunky fiancé Victor, and tour the Pepper Shack.
